This season has been anything but normal. Severe floods and landslides struck Aceh during the main coffee harvest in late 2025, damaging farms, cutting off communities and leaving many producers unable to harvest their coffee. We have continued our partnership with Ketiara through their smaller fly crop and are supporting the cooperative and affected farmers through both the price we pay for the coffee and this year’s Impact Trade funding.

The aroma shows cardamom, clove and dried berries, while the flavour leans toward cocoa, tobacco and sweet spice. Acidity is low, the texture heavy and smooth, and the finish lingers with an earthy, aromatic depth."

This coffee comes from the Gayo Highlands of Aceh in northern Sumatra, sourced through the Ketiara Cooperative. The cooperative is led by Ms. Rahmah, whose work has been central to improving both quality and opportunities for the many smallholder farmers she represents. More than seventy percent of Ketiara’s members are women, and the cooperative has become known for its focus on education, sustainable farming practices and community development.

The coffee is processed using the traditional wet-hulled method, a technique strongly associated with Sumatra. After pulping, the parchment is partially dried before the outer layer is removed while still moist. The beans then finish drying under the sun. This approach produces the intense, full-bodied profile that coffee from this region is known for, with deep sweetness, earthy warmth and a distinct rustic character.

Impact at origin

Our work with Ketiara has previously focused on practical improvements for smallholder farmers in the Gayo Highlands. Through the Coffee Farm Road Concrete Construction Project, pathways in Penangan Mata and Umang were rebuilt from mud tracks into concrete roads, giving farmers safer and more reliable access to their fields.

In late 2025, that community faced a very different challenge. Floods and landslides struck during the peak harvest, damaging roads, homes and farms and leaving coffee unpicked in the fields. More than 350 households were affected across just a handful of Ketiara’s member villages, with some farmers losing homes, farmland and their livelihoods.

For this season, our Impact Trade funding will therefore be directed towards the farmers and families most severely affected by the disaster. The funding will support concrete recovery needs, including direct financial relief and help rebuilding damaged homes and coffee farms.

This support is separate from the higher price we are already paying for this year’s coffee. By continuing to buy from Ketiara through a difficult season, we can keep value flowing into the cooperative and its farming communities while supporting those who have been hit hardest.
