The aroma shows cardamom, clove and dried berries, while the flavour leans toward cocoa, tobacco and sweet spice. Acidity is low, the texture heavy and smooth, and the finish lingers with an earthy, aromatic depth."

This coffee comes from the Gayo Highlands of Aceh in northern Sumatra, sourced through the Ketiara Cooperative. The cooperative is led by Ms. Rahmah, whose work has been central to improving both quality and opportunities for the many smallholder farmers she represents. More than seventy percent of Ketiara’s members are women, and the cooperative has become known for its focus on education, sustainable farming practices and community development.

The coffee is processed using the traditional wet-hulled method, a technique strongly associated with Sumatra. After pulping, the parchment is partially dried before the outer layer is removed while still moist. The beans then finish drying under the sun. This approach produces the intense, full-bodied profile that coffee from this region is known for, with deep sweetness, earthy warmth and a distinct rustic character.

Impact at origin

In Indonesia, our support has focused on improving daily working conditions for smallholder farmers in the Gayo Highlands. Through the Coffee Farm Road Concrete Construction Project, pathways in Penangan Mata and Umang were rebuilt from mud tracks into solid concrete roads, giving farmers safer and more reliable access to their fields.

These paths are essential during harvest, when cherries must be transported quickly and without damage. The upgraded roads now allow farmers to move by motorbike with far less risk, reducing physical strain and helping maintain cherry quality on the way to the processing station. The work benefits not only Ketiara members but also the wider community living around the farms.
