Peru | Organic Junín

Grown in Chanchamayo and Satipo by members of Cooperativa Tropicals

Medium Roasted Washed Arabica

"We like this Peruvian coffee for its roundness and balance. It’s sweet and mellow, with a soft, apple-like acidity and notes of caramel and milk chocolate that make it very approachable. As it rests after roasting, the cup opens up, revealing more fruit and freshness. It works especially well as espresso, but it also makes a clean, easy filter."

- Ante Bikic, Head Roaster at Amokka

This Organic coffee comes from the central jungle of Peru, in the districts of Pichanaqui and surrounding areas within the Chanchamayo and Satipo provinces of the Junín region. It is produced by smallholder farmers who are members of the Cooperativa Agraria Tropicals Products, a cooperative founded in 2018 by young professionals from coffee-growing families.

Tropicals was established to give farmers more direct control over quality, organisation, and sales. Today, the cooperative includes more than 100 member farms. Women play a central role across the organisation, both in farm management and in operational and leadership positions such as agronomy, quality control, and administration. Several of the founding members remain closely involved in the cooperative’s daily work.

Farms are typically small and family-run, with coffee grown at elevations between 1,000 and 1,800 meters above sea level. The main varieties cultivated include Catuai, Catimor, and Costa Rica 95, with plantings varying between farms. Coffee is generally processed at farm level using washed methods, before being consolidated and prepared for export through the cooperative.

Impact at origin: Bringing Trees Back to Coffee Farms

In Peru, our work with Tropicals is centred on a long-term Impact Project focused on reforestation in and around coffee-growing areas. Native tree species are raised in local nurseries and planted on and near member farms, where forest cover has been reduced over time.

The project combines tree planting with practical land and water management work. Farmers and community members prepare planting sites, build terraces, dig infiltration channels, and maintain the young trees over several years as they establish. This work takes place directly on the farms where this coffee is grown and supports the long-term stability of both the landscape and the livelihoods connected to it.
